Accra Flash Flood Forecasting app launched

Accra Flash Flood Forecasting (FFF) a mobile application aimed at curbing the devastating effects of flood in the country has been launched in Accra.

The app, developed by Royal HaskoningDHV, an international engineering consultancy firm, is an android mobile application downloadable on Google PlayStore.

The App provides a two and half hour alert to allow for evacuation when flood is detected.

Brigadier General Francis Vib-Sanziri, National Coordinator at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) speaking at the launch of the app said: “the ability to predict that there would be a disaster or an emergency is very vital to the ability to respond promptly to avoid destruction. This application is just about saving lives and property.”

Mr. Vib -Sanziri further: “Prevention pays and we believe that, if we are able to prevent some of these disasters in our environment, we will be able to develop all sectors of the economy as a country.”

Dr. Kingsford Asamoah, Crew Project Management, NADMO said the organization has  developed risk maps that is proportional to the vulnerability and vessel proportional tubes to help identify and track localities with high grounds and low grounds prone to floods in the country.”

“Disaster affects every aspect of the economy and when people are abreast with the new app, it will impact positively on the economy,” he said

Greater Accra Region has suburbs such as Alogboshie, Avenor, and Odawna and among many others areas which are noted for heavy floods during the rainy season and the introduction of the app is expected to minimise the impact of flood.
