AngloGold to fully shut Obuasi Mine

AngloGold Ashanti has warned it may be forced to shut down its Obuasi mine completely if current impasse between it and illegal miners there is not resolved soon.

Anglogold Ashanti early this week suspended its essential services following clashes between illegal miners and some of its staff, leading to the death of the company’s Communication Director, John Owusu.

According to Anglogold the security situation at the mine has not seen any improvement since the death of its communications specialist John Owusu.

Citi Business News has gathered the Police has partially withdrawn security men that were stationed on the company’s concession to protect lives and properties.

The situation according to AngloGold Ashanti has emboldened the illegal miners who currently have gone as far as invading some parts of the underground concession of the company.

Speaking on Citi FM’s consumer focus show “Business Today” Sustainability Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Nana Ampofo said the company may forced to shut its operation if the situation remains the same in the coming weeks.

He rejected calls for the mining firm to cede off part of concession to the illegal miners.
