Ghacem holds Safety-week durbar

The managing Director of Ghacem limited, Mr. Morten Gade, has reaffirmed management’s commitment to go any length to promote safety practices in its operation to protect human lives.

He said zero harm can be achieved at the workplace if everyone becomes each other’s keeper.

“We need to care for each other, whether fellow employees, customers, suppliers or drivers. All deserves attention, alertness or intervention to avoid meaningless fatalities. We all have a responsibility to fight unsafe acts and risky behaviour by stopping anyone acting in an unsafe manner,” he said

Mr. Gade gave the exhortation in his address during the company’s annual ‘Safety Week Durbar’ held last Thursday concurrently at its Tema and Takoradi factories.

Observed under the theme ‘Zero Harm: Possible & Sustainable’, the week-long event saw workers of the company undergo a series of activities such as a talk on healthy lifestyles; workplace inspection to investigate safety practices at the workplace; safety competition; training for emergency response; and an Aerobics session.

For championing the cause of safety and applying best practices in his line of duty, Mr. Joshua Yankson of the Maintenance Department emerged as the 2015 Safety Personality, while the coveted Near Miss Reporter Award went to Daniel Adom Botchway of Production Department for having submitted 70 reports. Other departments which won various awards for promoting safety practices included Quality Assurance, Production and Marketing.

Mr. Gade announced that Management, in its quest to ensure safe practices at the workplace, has enforced its drug and alcohol policy to ensure that people who enter into its factory stay clear of drugs and alcohol.

On his part, Works Manager, Eugene Laryea urged the workers to reflect on the theme and be ready to work toward achieving it — emphasising that possibility starts from the mind, “so have in mind that it is possible,” he said
