Ghana is 12th best country for business in Africa- Forbes

Ghana has been ranked 90th out of 139 countries on Forbes 2016 ‘best country to do business’ annual ranking. This is a slip from 79 position in 2015 ranking.

However, this put Ghana at 12th position among 35 African countries captured in the ranking, behind Mauritius (39), South Africa (48), Morocco (51), Namibia (63), Botswana (68), Cape Verde ( 70), Rwanda ( 78) , Senegal ( 81), Zambia (86), Tunisia (87) and Lesotho ( 88)

8 West Africa countries, Liberia (96), Benin (100), Cote d’Ivoire (106), Mali (109), Sierra Leone (110), Nigeria (120), Mauritania (125) and Gambia (138)  were all behind Ghana

On factors used for the ranking, Ghana scored 36/139 on personal freedom, 53 on property right, 55  when it comes to corruption, 80 for investors’ protection and 68 in innovation.

Others are market performance; 88, Red tape; 90, Technology and Tax burden; both at 93, 119 and 129 for Trade freedom and Monetary Freedom respectively.

According to forbes, Ghana’s GDP is put at $38 billion, a growth of 3.9 percent, GDP per capita of $1,400, trade balance to GDP of -7.5% and a population of 26.9 million

Nigeria is ranked at 120 up by 2 in the world and 24th in Africa with a population of 186.1 million. The country’s GDP growth is put at 2.7 per cent, its GDP per capita is $2,600 and trade balance to GDP is -3.2 per cent.

This time, Sweden beat Denmark to the first place, with Denmark placing 6th behind United Kingdom. Sweden with a population of 9.9 million, has GDP of 493 billion, 5.2 per cent GDP growth, $50,300 GDP per capita and trade balance to GDP of 5.2 per cent.

Again chad took the bottom of the list at, ranking poorly from 107/139 in monetary freedom to 139/139 in tax burden.

With a population of 1.3 million, Mauritius is the number one country in Africa on the ranking. It has a GDP per capita of $9, 100, a trade balance to GDP of -4.4 per cent and GDP growth of 3.5 per cent.
