To further ensure that Ghana becomes more competitive in aviation within the sub-region, Aviation Minister, Joseph Kofi Adda has indicated that a committee led by the Airport Company has been setup to find solutions to aviation fuel price issues.
In a meeting with Aviation Operators in Accra on Thursday, the Minister said, “the high nature of fuel price has implications for us as a government,” adding, “if aircrafts are landing in Ghana and crossing over to Ivory Coast or any other country to refuel and come back to Ghana, then it means that we are losing out in terms of revenue.”
The price of Aviation fuel in Ghana compared to the sub-region apart from Nigeria still remains high.
The committee would be looking at the price build- up components and measures for reduction to ensure affordability and competitiveness. Its recommendations would then be forwarded to the Ministry of Energy and Finance for further directives.
2019 Budget
Speaking on the ministry’s policy target for next year, Adda noted that policy initiative will be to address the high cost of fuel, duties on spare parts among others.
“If we could get adequate information on these issues from the sector operators, we would ensure that they are put forward in a policy recommendation to the finance ministry,” he said.
Airline Operators
In an interview with the President for the Board of Airline Representatives, Ghana, Gloria Wilkinson Mensah noted that government in the past years has reduced the pricing of aviation fuel by some 22 cents per litre. She however questioned why we are not that competitive as compared to our neighboring countries.
“If we want Ghana to be gateway for transit hub, we need to consolidate our position, said Wilkinson Mensah, further stating that, “If it would become a transfer hub, then a lot more carriers should find good reasons to consider the country as their connecting point for domestic and regional carriers to distribute.”
