GPRTU to review transport fares on January 7

The Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) is set to review transport fares on January 7, 2015 to reflect the recent 10% decrease in petroleum products.

A statement signed by GPRTU’s General Secretary, Stephen Okudzeto said although the reduction of fuel prices is taking effect on January 1, 2015, the union is on a short break and will accordingly review its prices upon resumption.

The GPRTU has thus appealed to the general public to exercise restraint with public transport operators until January 7 when new prices will be announced.

The Union also commended the government for the reduction, stating that it will help reduce their operational cost.

Following mounting pressure to reduce petroleum prices due to the drop in crude oil prices on the world market, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) reduced fuel prices by 10% on December 31.

The Authority had early on refused to reduce the prices arguing it owed the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies a whooping GHc412, 000 and wanted to clear the debt first.

So far, the BDCs have been paid GHc200million.
