Inflation hits 16.9% in August

The inflation rate for the month of August went up marginally to 16.9 percent from the 16.7 percent recorded in July 2016.

The monthly change rate for August was -0.6 percent compared to 0.9 percent for the month of July

According to Ghana Statistical Service, elements of the non-food group namely;  Education, transport, housing, water, electricity, and recreation among others accounted for this increase, recording 21.5 percent, compared to 21.2 percent in July.

Education recorded the highest inflation rate of 34.1

Meanwhile the food component decreased from 8.6 percent recorded in July to 8.5 percent

At the regional level, Greater Accra recorded the highest inflation of 20.1 percent followed by Ashanti region with 18.5 percent while the Upper East region recorded the lowest rate of 11.8% for July this year.

Inflation for the month of July had declined from 18.4 percent recorded in June 2016.

The consumer price index measures the change over time in the general price levels of goods and services that households require for the purpose of consumption.
