Inflation rate hits 16.9%

Ghana’s inflation for the month of October has hit 16.9 percent; a 0.4 percent increase from September’s 16.50 percent; making it the highest since March 2010.

Figures from the Ghana Statistical Board attributed a 36 per cent inflation rate in the non-food sector to housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; with transport recording 30.6 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded 6.5 percent; an increase of 0.7 percent from September’s 5.8 percent.

At the regional level, Upper East Region recorded the highest regional year-on-year inflation rate of 19.7 percent while the Upper West Region recorded the lowest, 13.4 percent. Five other regions, Central, Northern, Eastern, Ashanti and Western recorded inflation rates above the national average of 16.9 percent.

However, there was a decrease in the non-food group. It recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 24 percent in October 2014, compared to the 24.1 percent recorded in September 2014.
