Load shedding exercise to intensify- Energy ministry

The on-going load shedding exercise in Ghana is set to worsen as Nigeria halts gas supply to the country.

Sources say the decision was taken as a result of labour unrest in the parts where Ghana gets her gas supply.

“We were informed through VRA that there had been some labour unrests in Nigeria, particularly where the area where we get our gas from and therefore, all the workers had laid down their tools,” spokesperson for the Energy Ministry, Edward Bawa explained.

This means a shutdown of the Asogli Power plant which provides 180 megawatts of energy to the national grid.

This is the third time Nigeria has interrupted its gas supply to Ghana.

Head of Corporate Communications at the Volta River Authority (VRA), Sam Fletcher however says most of the machines used by the VRA are dual powered; meaning both light crude oil and natural gas are used therefore, in the absence of natural gas, there will be a switch to light crude oil.

Turkish firm Karpower International Limited is currently building two emergency power ships for the country. The two mobile energy plants, when delivered, will add 450 megawatts of power to the national grid.
