MTN, Surfline & Goldkey bid for NCA’s 800MHz License

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced that four companies have applied to take part in its auction of the 800MHz band spectrum.

The four companies are MTN Ghana, Surfline Communications, Goldkey Telecom and Migson Communications. The four all submitted applications by the 9 November 2015 deadline and now await assessment of eligibility by the NCA.

The NCA is planning to auction two blocks of 2x10MHz spectrum in the aforementioned band (valid for 15 years), with a minimum reserve price of USD67.5 million.

According to the NCA applying entities must be registered under the laws of Ghana and duly certified to operate in Ghana, while entities with foreign ownership – companies, joint ventures or consortia – must have a minimum of 35% Ghanaian ownership.

The NCA is expected to announce its decision in due course.

Meanwhile the NCA has selected KPMG as the Auctioneer for the auction process of the 800 MHz Band.

KPMG will now be responsible for managing the process leading up to the auction and the actual auction.

This will involve setting out the rules of the auction and ensuring an independent and transparent process.
