The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has appealed to government to re-channel a GH¢35 million allocated for Green House Technology and Capacity Building into supporting small-holder farmers.
According to the leadership of the association, funds allocated in the 2016 budget for the development of the agriculture sector were insufficient, hence the need to make prudent use of funds available.
Mr Charles Nyaaba, the Programme Officer PFAG, who made the call at a Send Ghana workshop explained that small holder farmers in Ghana lack adequate resources that could expand their farms.
Even though majority of small-holder farmers engage in the production of vegetables such as legumes, and cereals, Mr. Nyaaba pointed out that governments over the years have neglected farmers in those areas.
“These areas of agriculture employ a lot of our members including women. We strongly believe that investing in these areas will go a long way to improve the lives of many families, especially women in rural areas”, he said.
He disclosed that 90 percent of the farming population was small holders, with 55 percent of them being women.
