Premier League transfer spending to hit £1bn this season

Premier League football clubs spending on transfers this season is expected to break the £1bn mark for the first time.

Spending for the January 2016 window currently stands at £130m, the same as last year, according to Deloitte.

The transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday and last minute deals mean the total could top that amount.

“With further spending expected, Premier League gross transfer spending look set to comfortably exceed the £1bn mark,” said Deloitte’s Dan Jones.

A record £965m was spent in 2014-15, but that total has already been surpassed this season, with the final figure likely to be in excess of £1bn, according to Deloitte, the accountants, who carry out the bi-annual football spend survey.

During the 2015 summer transfer window, the biggest spenders Manchester City, paid the two biggest fees, £55m for Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg and £49m for Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.

Mr Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, added: “We’ve seen Premier League clubs again use the January window to invest significantly in playing talent.

“With a day left, the total gross spending this season has already reached £1bn for the first time.”

Last January, Premier League clubs spent £45m on the final day of the transfer window.
