The Minister for Aviation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has explained that the national carrier that will be established will not be wholly owned by government.
According to her, the new airline will be operated under what she terms as a ‘Home Base Carrier’ which will have private investors leading in the management of the airline.
Her comments follow an earlier assertion to Citi Business News, announcing that three airlines, namely Mauritius Airlines, AWA, and Ethiopian Airlines have all expressed interest to partner government.
Speaking with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, Madam Cecilia Dapaah justified the need for a national carrier since it will aid government’s agenda of making Ghana an aviation hub in West Africa.
“Cabinet has given approval for a home base carrier, there is a difference, we have shifted from the national carrier to a home base carrier which can qualify to be a national carrier.
“The difference is that, a national crier is wholly owned by government, Home base carrier can also be a national carrier but what we are proposing, is that we are encouraging Ghanaians who have the know-how, technically, professionally , and financially to be part of it, so that we can all own it,” she explained.
Madam Dapaah stated that government is not going to commit funds but will strategically look for investors who will invest into the company.
“We don’t want wholly owned government institution again. That is the concept now and it ties into government’s vision to make Accra the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) the hub of aviation in the West African region”
