Samsung Electronics is in discussions to sell its PC business to Lenovo, South Korean media are reporting.
According to sources, the South Korean tech giant is negotiating with its Chinese counterpart, the world’s largest PC vendor, to sell the business.
If the sale goes through, it will follow Samsung’s sale of its printing business to US giant HP for over $1 billion, which was approved in October.
The report quoted a senior executive as saying that printing and PC should be considered to be under the same category and it was the natural next step to sell its PC business as well.
Smasung has been selling businesses that it believes are not central to its roadmap and are becoming unprofitable. The company has been negotiating for months with Lenovo but it is unclear whether the deal will go through, the report said.
Since the emergence of smartphones, the market for desktops and notebooks have seen a gradual decline. Sales of PCs have been on a decline for the past two years.
While offloading unprofitable businesses, Samsung is acquiring new companies, such as AI-based voice assistant developer Viv and auto-components maker Harman, and focusing on its platform for Internet of Things and component businesses.
