SPS inaugurates solar panel manufacturing plant

Indigenous company Strategic Power Solutions (SPS) last Thursday launched an ultra-modern solar panel manufacturing plant at Kpone near Tema.

Speaking at the ceremony to officially open the multimillion dollar factor, SPS Chief Executive Officer Oheneba Ofori Boateng said: “At a time Ghanaians are still looking for alternative, stable and affordable energy solutions to complement what is produced by the national grid, SPS brings on board lessons learnt from previous attempts made by other companies; as well as results from intense consultations with diverse stakeholders which we have woven into a robust strategy”.

The company, which is the first of its kind in the West Africa sub-region, will focus on packaging solar solutions that promote human development and human security while providing unlimited power and customised solutions to satisfy different segments of society.

According to Mr. Boateng, the complexities and uncertainties that have characterised our traditional sources of power — and which resulted in irreparable loss of revenue generation, employment etc. — necessitated the establishment of SPS to serve Ghana and the sub-region.

Given shortfalls in the country’s power generation largely caused by rising cost of production and environmental factors, energy experts have touted the benefit of turning to renewables.

The SPS CEO reiterated the role the company aims to play in Ghana’s market, saying that: “We all know that the world has taken a turn toward the use of renewable, clean energy; and this is critical for healthy growth, especially in our part of the world where we are fortunate to have such resources in abundance”.

Chairman of the company Dr. Francis Akuamoah-Boateng said his inspiration for the project was born out of his desire to make a meaningful contribution to the growth of Ghana.  He stated that the company’s solar modules include all sizes of installation, with products like micro/macro solar grid systems; and it also supplies and installs off-grid and grid systems, photovoltaic systems and PV streetlights.

Speaking at the event Dr. Mensa Otabil lauded the company’s founder and Chairman, Dr. Akuamoah-Boateng, for his leadership — adding that the country could do with more visionaries like the SPS founder.

He argued that there is much government can do to enable its citizens become more productive. He urged government to forge an enabling environment devoid of bureaucracy and poor policies.

The citizens, he said, given the right platform can generate wealth for the country; but with government’s poor policies and unfriendly business environment a lot companies are not able to realise their potential.

The company has through its innovation improved the lives of Ghanaians, especially rural dwellers, through the installation of over 20,000 solar streetlights across the country.

The launch of the SPS manufacturing plant was witnessed by former President John Agyekum Kufuor-UN Special Envoy for Climate Change; a representative of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II; as well as members of the diplomatic corps, financial and real-estate sectors.
