Takoradi dry dock still operational

Contrary to speculations that the Dry Dock in the Port of Takoradi is not operational, management says the facility is serving vessels that require maintenance.

The massive expansion works ongoing at the Port of Takoradi will not only position the port as an oil and gas hub, but also one for repairs of oil rigs and vessels.

Marine Operations Manager at the Port of Takoradi, Francis Kwesi Micha speaking in an interview with Eyeonport, said as part of the expansion project a floating dry dock will come on stream next year to augment the existing dry dock facility.

According to him, the floating dry dock will also make it possible for the repair of larger vessels with deeper drafts which hitherto could not visit the port for maintenance.

The current state of the Takoradi dry dock has also been expanded, making it possible for 3 vessels to be attended and repaired at the same time, he noted.

The Takoradi Port dry dock facility, Kwesi Micha noted, is certified by the International Standard Organisation — which puts it ahead of other shipyards in Lome and Abidjan.

He said the massive expansion works at the Takoradi Port will enable more supply vessels to come into the port for routine maintenance works, adding that the Port of Takoradi has the human resources and equipment to handle oil and gas vessels.

He said all maintenance work carried out on vessels that call at the port have been satisfactorily done, since there hasn’t been any incident of return/call-back as a result of unprofessional work.
