Tamale airport to get international status

Work has begun on the Tamale airport to upgrade it to the status of an international airport.

The project, which is funded with a loan facility from the Brazilian government and is being undertaken by Brazilian company Geiroz Galvao, the same company reconstructing the Kwame Nkrumah interchange in the capital, is expected to be completed and inaugurated in September this year.

The first phase of the project consists of extending the runway from the current 2,480 metres to about 3,940 metres, and the installation of a complete lighting system to accommodate bigger aircrafts so as to serve as the second international airport in the country.

The finished airport will have all the facilities including spacious maintenance bays and hangers for the aircrafts.

The project, which has become necessary due to the growing demand for air transport, is expected to cost US$174million.
