The Royal Bank renews US$50,000 KNUST scholarship package

Management of the Royal Bank Limited, in its quest to support the development of human capital through awards, has renewed a three-year award scheme package of US$50,000 for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology, Kumasi.

The scholarship scheme was set up three years ago with the primary objective to support students in achieving academic excellence.

The scheme, according to Vice Chancellor of the University Professor William Otoo Ellis, achieved its purpose, hence approval of the proposal to renew it for the next three years.

The scheme has over the years recognized excellence in terms of the students’ performance and that of staff.

The Royal Bank, in collaboration with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS) of the KNUST, has recognised the hard work of about fifty students and rewarded them with certificates and cash prizes.

The College comprises the Faculty of Social Science which is made up of the Departments of Economics, English, Geography and Rural Development, Culture & Tourism, Political Science and History.

The rest of the Departments under Social Science include Modern Languages, Sociology, Social Work and Religious Studies.

Other faculties under the CoHSS are the School of Law with the Departments of Private Law, Commercial Law and Public Law; the KNUST School of with the Departments of Accounting, Banking & Finance, Insurance and Risk Management, Marketing & Corporate Strategy, Information System and Decision Sciences.

The overall best student award went to Benjamin Kojo Agyare at the Accounting Department in the KNUST School of Business, with grade points of 83.02.

Amanda Esi Buckman, also of the School of Business, narrowly came second with grade points of 83.01.

The CEO & Managing Director of The Royal Bank, Mr. Kow Bentil was happy with the award scheme’s successful implementation and its progress so far.

Mr. Bentil stressed the need to strengthen the relationship between the corporate world and academia; this he believes will bridge what he describes as the textbook and field work gap that exists between the corporate world and the universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions.

By this belief TRB has trained and employed over two hundred fresh graduates, who are currently working with the bank.

He has therefore called on other corporate institutions to open their doors to students for internship programmes.

This, he believes, will help them understand the systems and processes in the corporate world before they eventually graduate.

He advised students to see such internships as training grounds and not avenues for making money.

The Royal Bank within its three-year period of operations has won a number of awards both locally and internationally.

These include the new Era Award for Total Quality customer Satisfaction received in Rome, Italy, in June 2014; and Top Emerging Brand at the Top Brand Award in December 2014.

In additon six awards were won by the bank in the 13th and 14th Ghana Banking Awards.
