Vodafone Launches Coding Programme For Young People

Vodafone Ghana has launched a nation-wide coding programme for Ghanaian youth between the ages of 14 and 18 in line with its vision of spearheading the country’s digital revolution.

According to Vodafone Ghana’s Chief Executive, Yolanda Cuba, the programme seeks to prepare young people to become the next generation of Ghanaian and African digital creators.

“The national coding programme is part of a concerted approach to touching lives through the power of technology and innovation. We hope to reach over 500 people across all the ten regions of Ghana by the end of the financial year,” she said.

The coding programme aims to train about 10,000 youth within a five-year period.

She added that “Vodafone Ghana is poised to lead the journey into total digital inclusion in Ghana. It is for this reason that we are engaging coding-proficient staff members of our company to handle this project.”

The company said youth within the age limit can register for the programme by visiting http://bit.ly/codingprogram.

“In a world of ubiquitous computing, where personal computers are now part of mainstream social life; coding has become an intrinsic part of the digital future and a critical skillset needed to succeed in this life. Coding is a big part of our strategy to ignite Ghana’s digital future, and it starts with the youth,” Ms. Cuba indicated.

Deputy Minister of CommunicationsVincent Odotei Sowah, who launched the programme, lauded Vodafone for the initiative.

“We will do everything possible to achieve government’s digitalisation agenda and help create a better future for Ghana,” Mr. Sowah noted.

“It is fulfilling that our youth can get this opportunity to become change makers with coding. Inasmuch as it is comforting for us that Vodafone is taking the lead in this, we want to also pledge that we are committed to ensuring that they will be given flexible room to operate efficiently; imbibing the latest technology and innovation to succeed whilst bringing immense benefits to our youth,” he added.
