We owe BDCs GHc304million not GHc1.5billion- Gov’t

Mr Cassiel Ato ForsonDeputy Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson has refuted allegations by the Chief Executive of Bulk-oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) that government owed it GHc1.5billion.

According to the deputy Minister, the amount is rather GHc304million.

As at December 2013, Mr Forson said government owed the BDCs about GHc204million, out of which GHc120million was paid leaving GHc84million.

He indicated that government again incurred an additional GH¢220 million from January 2014 to date, resulting in a total outstanding debt of GH¢304 million owed the BDCs.

But Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution Companies, Senyo Hosi, insists the amount is over one billion cedis.

Early this week, the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution Companies warned of an impending fuel crisis as a result of the association’s inability to raise letters of credit (LCs) to honour supplies.

True to their word, the country is currently experiencing a shortage in fuel as BDCs insist the shortage will only be resolved if the debt owed them is paid.

Accra, Cape coast, Tema and Kumasi are currently experiencing the shortage as various filling stations have many vehicles queuing; waiting to be supplied with the fuel.
